Causes of Vaginal Infection

  • Lesser acidity (Increased pH) in the vagina leads to the less protective bacteria (lactobacilli) that are normally had in Vagina.
  • If the genital region isnโ€™t kept clean, the number of bacteria will increase and lead to bacterial infection.
  • Tight and non-absorbing underwear may trap moisture and encourage the growth of bacteria and yeast
  • The tissues of the pelvis are damaged due to several causes โ€“ surgery, radiation treatment, tumors, fistulas, birth defects, and structural abnormalities that weaken the bodyโ€™s natural defenses.
  • Inflammation of vaginal tissue can cause tears and pain that allow bacteria and yeast to enter the bloodstream.
  • Sexually transmitted infections, for example, due to sexual abuse

  • Hormonal changes during the childbearing years
  • Low estrogen levels post-menopausal

Treatment

Different treatments depend on the cause of the vaginal infection. Yeast infections can be treated with medications that are inserted into the vagina. Yeast infections are treatable through oral medications. Bacterial vaginosis is treated with antibiotics such as tablets. Trichomoniasis disease is treated with oral antibiotics.
