Fallopian tube recanalization (FTR) is a non-surgical procedure to remove the obstruction in the fallopian tubes that are part of the female reproductive system.

The fallopian tubes are important for a woman’s fertility. They are the passages for the egg to reach the uterus from the ovaries. During conception, the following things happen:

• The ovary releases an egg travelling to the fallopian tube.
• The Sperms travel to the fallopian tubes for the fertilization of the egg.
• The resulting embryos are nourished and transported to the uterus where pregnancy continues.

A common cause of infertility in women is obstruction inside the fallopian tubes, usually as a result of accumulated debris. In some cases, surgical scarring and serious infections can also lead to obstruction.

Fallopian Tube Recanalization Procedure

Fallopian tube recanalization (FTR) is a non-surgical procedure used by interventional radiologists to treat these obstructions. Recanalization is the medical term for “resumption” or “Reopening”. During this procedure, there is no need for any needles or incisions, the following procedure is followed:

• A speculum is inserted into the vagina and a small plastic tube (catheter) is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
• Inject a liquid contrast agent (called a dye though nothing is stained) through the catheter.
• Watch the uterine cavity on a monitor using an X-ray camera.
• Obtain a hystero-salpingogram or HSG- uterus-and-fallopian-tube-picture.
• Determine if there is an obstruction and if it is in one or both fallopian tubes.
• A small catheter is passed through the first catheter and then through the fallopian tubes to remove the obstruction.
