Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

  • It is an artificial insemination procedure in which a doctor transfers sperm collected from a man directly into the uterus of a woman to help her become pregnant.
  • The goal of IUI is to increase the chances of pregnancy by overcoming several causes of infertility and bringing sperm closer to mature eggs during ovulation.
  • IUI is used in cases where the donor sperm is required to achieve pregnancy.
  • The IUI process includes fertility testing, taking medications to induce ovulation, selecting sperm donors, and performing sperm placement procedures.
  • There are risks involved with the IUI infection from this procedure, which is rare, and the chances of multiple pregnancies (twins or more), if ovulation induction medicine is used.

What is IUI?

IUI is a type of artificial insemination in which a doctor inserts sperm directly into a woman’s uterus using a catheter. The goal of IUI is to achieve pregnancy by making it easier for sperm to reach and fertilize mature eggs in the female fallopian tubes leading to the uterus.

IUI Vs IVF

Intrauterine insemination, IUI treatment involves the process of placing the sperm directly into the uterus using a catheter. Whereas In-vitro fertilization (IVF), the eggs are first surgically removed by a needle going through the back of the vagina and those eggs are fertilized outside of the body.

IUI almost doubles a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant compared to sexual intercourse and the previous form of artificial insemination that involves inserting sperm into a woman’s vagina. After the IUI procedure, women under the age of 35 usually have a 10% chance of becoming pregnant. Women over the age of 35 are less than 5% more likely to become pregnant after IUI because their fertility declines as they get older.
