Family planning is “the ability of an individual or couple to predict and achieve the desired number of children and the intervals and timing of births. This is achieved through the use of contraceptive methods and the treatment of unwanted infertility. Family planning involves considering the number of children a woman wants to have, such as the decision not to have children and the age at which she wants to have children.

Family planning matters are influenced by some external factors such as marital situation, profession considerations, economic position, and any disabilities that can have an effect on giving birth and raise the children. If sexually active, there can be use of contraception and other techniques to control the timing of reproduction as part of family planning procedure

Family Planning Surgery

Surgical procedures that are in use currently for family planning include tubal ligation -female sterilization and vasectomy -male sterilization. Potential recipients need to be carefully selected and counselled.

Tubal Ligation Surgery:  In this surgical procedure, the fallopian tubes are cut, tied or blocked for preventing the pregnancy permanently. This procedure if performed prevents an egg from travelling from the ovaries via the fallopian tubes and blocks sperm from travelling through the fallopian tubes to the egg. It doesn’t affect the person’s menstrual cycle.

Vasectomy: This procedure involves a small operation for preventing pregnancy. It prevents sperm from entering semen during ejaculation. No one can get pregnant if sperm do not get out of the body. You still have an orgasm and can ejaculate.
