Cervical Cerclage in Pregnancy

Overview

Pregnancy is one of the crucial stages of a mother’s life as well as the baby’s life.  During 9 months of pregnancy, there is the occurrence of so many things including changes to a woman’s body but every woman hopes for a smooth pregnancy and healthy baby.  Despite all precautions, there may arise some unwanted situations leading to the loss of the baby because of cervical insufficiency.

What Is Cervical Insufficiency?

Cervix is an important part of a woman’s reproductive system that dilates and opens at the end of pregnancy during normal pregnancy.  The lower narrower portion of the uterus is called the cervix.

When it comes to the incompetent cervix or cervical insufficiency is a condition described by the premature dilation and effacing of the cervix. It occurs when the cervix is unable to take on the pressure of the baby’s growth. At this stage, the cervix becomes weaker, softer, and shorter.

Cervical Cerclage

Cervical cerclage is also known as a cervical stitch. It is a medical procedure performed during pregnancy that involves sewing the cervix closed. The cervix is a funnel-shaped tissue. It opens up during childbirth to move the baby out of the uterus via the vagina. The doctor performs this procedure if there is the possibility of the arrival of the baby early or there is a chance of miscarriage because of a weak cervix. This treatment is done in the hospital and the patient can go home the same day.

Cervical cerclage is a series of procedures that involves using sutures or synthetic tape for strengthening pregnancy in women who have a weaker or softer cervix.  There are following two ways of doing Cervical Cerclage:

• Transvaginal cervical cerclage (done through Vagina )
• Transabdominal cervical cerclage ( done through Abdomen)

Why would you do Cervical Cerclage?

The cervix remains closed, firm, and long before pregnancy. During pregnancy and as the delivery approaches, the cervix gradually softens, effaces (decreases in length), and dilates to get prepared for the birth. If the woman’s cervix is inefficient and short, it opens up too early giving rise to miscarriage or pregnancy, or premature birth. In such a situation, Cervical Cerclage is advised.

There are some conditions where cervical cerclage isn’t appropriate such as:

• Active vaginal bleeding
• An intrauterine infection
• Active preterm labor
