 Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction or sexual problem is a disorder that may arise during any phase of the sexual response cycle and prevents a person or couple from getting desired satisfaction from sexual activity. The sexual response cycle traditionally is related to excitement, orgasm, plateau, and resolution. The survey indicates that some 43% of women and almost 31% of men experience some sort of sexual dysfunction. People of all ages can experience such difficulty.

Desire and arousal are come under the sexual response, although women don’t always pass through these phases in order. Sexual dysfunction is common in many people but they don’t like talking about it. The person should talk to his/her partner and the doctor.

Types of Sexual Problem

• Desire or Interest Disorder– Low sexual desire or No desire for sex

• Pain disorders – Feeling of pain during intercourse

Symptoms of sexual problem or dysfunction

Men

1. Incapability to achieve or maintain the erection suitable for intercourse (erectile dysfunction)
2. Absence or late ejaculation despite enough sexual stimulation (retarded ejaculation)
3. Incapability to control the timing of ejaculation (early or premature)

Women

• Incapable to achieve orgasm
• Irregular vaginal lubrication before and during intercourse
• Incapable in relaxing the vaginal muscles enough to allow intercourse

In men and women

• Low desire or no desire for sex
• Inability to stay aroused
• Pain during intercourse

Causes of sexual problem

• Physical causes: Many physical and/or underlying medical conditions can create problems in sexual activity. These conditions could be diabetes, hormonal imbalances, heart and vascular (blood vessel) disease, neurological disorders, chronic diseases like kidney or liver failure, and alcoholism or drug abuse. There are side effects of some medications such as antidepressant drugs that can affect sexual capability.
• Psychological causes: These causes are related to work-related stress, depression, worrying about sexual performance, marital or relationship problems, feeling of guilt, low self-esteem about body image, and the effects of past sexual trauma.

Treatment

Majority of sexual problems can be treated via treating the underlying physical or psychological problems. The treatments include:

1. Medication: The medications can be very effective in treating the sexual problem. Men and women with hormone deficiencies will be benefited from hormone shots, pills, or creams. There are drugs like men such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra & Staxyn), and avanafil (Stendra) and improve sexual function by increasing blood flow to the penis. For women, there are two medications such as flibanserin (Addyi) and bremelanotide (Vyleesi).
2. Mechanical aids: Treatments such as vacuum devices and penile implants can help men with erectile dysfunction (failing to achieve or maintain an erection). A vacuum device (EROS-CTD™) can be used in women but can be expensive. Dilators and vibrators can improve sexual enjoyment and climax.
3. Sex therapy: Sex therapists can provide sexual counseling to couples for better enjoyment of the sexual relationship. The affected couples can be counseled by a trained professional.
4. Psychotherapy: People often suffer from stress, depression, marital discord, or poor body image syndrome that may normal sexual desire. Sexologists can provide better therapy.
